Beat Müller is Medical Director of the University Department, Kantonsspital, Aarau, Switzerland and Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology of the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel. He studied medicine in Berne, Switzerland and South-Africa and post graduated at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.
His clinical and research interests focus on pragmatic outcome and quality control studies using hormonal biomarkers (“hormokines”) in general medicine, endocrinology, infectious diseases, critical illness and pulmonology. He assessed calcitonin peptides, most prominently procalcitonin and proadrenomedullin, unraveled their physiopathological regulation and evaluated their clinical use to guide risk-adapted antibiotic stewardship and length of hospitalization, respectively.
His research obtained multiple honors and awards and was disseminated in > 500 publications including all top-ranked journals of medicine, infectious diseases, pulmonary and critical care and, last but not least, endocrinology. He is a member of numerous professional societies and is regularly invited for plenary lectures at congresses both nationally and internationally.
