Thierry Calandra is a Professor of Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Head of the Infectious Diseases Service at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois, Lausanne, Switzerland. He received his MD degree from the University of Lausanne and his PhD degree from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Over the years, Dr Calandra’s research interests have focused on innate immunity, sepsis, bacterial and fungal infections in the intensive care unit and in immunocompromised hosts. He has published more than 250 original articles, reviews, book chapters and monographs. He has received career award grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Leenaards Foundation.
Dr Calandra is a member of several medical societies, including the American Society for Microbiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the Swiss Society for Infectious Diseases and the International Sepsis Forum. He is a former member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation, although at some level he continues to function as a reviewer. He is a past-President of the Swiss Society for Infectious Diseases, the International Immunocompromised Host Society, the Infectious Diseases Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and the Fungal Infection Network of Switzerland (FUNGINOS).
