Helena Barrasa

Speaker in Session 6

Helena is an intensive care physician at Araba University Hospital (Spain) and a clinical researcher at the Bioaraba Health Research Institute. Her work focuses on the optimization and personalization of antimicrobial therapy in critically ill patients, with particular expertise in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

She leads research initiatives aimed at improving antibiotic dosing through therapeutic drug monitoring and model-informed precision dosing, addressing key sources of variability such as augmented renal clearance and patient-specific factors. Her current work also explores equity in antimicrobial therapy, including sex-related differences in drug exposure, efficacy, and toxicity in sepsis.

She has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and has led multiple competitive research projects in antimicrobial therapy in critical care.

Her work aims to translate pharmacological knowledge into clinical decision-making, advancing safer, more precise, and more equitable treatments for critically ill patients.
