Hans-Jörg Lang

Hans-Jörg Lang, MD, PhD, FRCPCH-UK, is a paediatrician and paediatric intensive care specialist with over 20 years of experience working at the intersection of clinical care, global health, and humanitarian response. Hans-Jörg trained in paediatrics and paediatric intensive care medicine in the United Kingdom and has since collaborated extensively with development and humanitarian organizations, primarily across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Hans-Jörg is affiliated with the Global Child Health Group at the Heidelberg Institute for Global Health in Heidelberg, Germany, where Hans-Jörg leads initiatives focused on the training and implementation of paediatric essential emergency and critical care. This work is carried out in close partnership with collaborators in Madagascar, Zambia, and Sierra Leone. Hans-Jörg’s professional interests include climate-resilient health facility design and the integration of renewable energy solutions to improve access to essential care services in low-resource settings.

In addition, Hans-Jörg serves as an Advisor for Paediatrics and Critical Care with the NGO The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA), based in Dakar, Senegal. Since 2019, Hans-Jörg has been actively involved in multiple Ebola and Marburg virus outbreak responses, including deployments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, and, most recently in Kasai Province, DRC (2025).

Hans-Jörg has contributed to several WHO technical working groups and has been involved in training and simulation exercises for filovirus outbreak contexts, with a particular focus on paediatric care. Hans-Jörg also contributed to the 2026 review of the Paediatric Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines and is associated with the World Federation of Paediatric Intensive and Critical Care Society.
