Jerry Zimmerman

Jerry is a Professor of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology, and a senior faculty member of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Seattle Children’s Hospital and Harborview Medical Center at the University of Washington, School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington, USA. Jerry received BS and PhD degrees at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, majoring in biochemistry, oncology, and organic chemistry. He also received an MD degree and pediatric residency training at the same institution. Subsequently, he received fellowship training at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington DC, which included research experience at the National Institutes of Health. Previously he served as Division Chief for Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Wisconsin and University of Washington Schools of Medicine. As Co-editor of the textbook, Pediatric Critical Care, now in its sixth edition, he is familiar with the academic landscape of pediatric critical care. He was principal investigator for the NIH/NICHD, Life After Pediatric Sepsis Evaluation (LAPSE) investigation, and is a co-principal investigator for the ongoing NIH/NICHD, Stress Hydrocortisone In Pediatric Septic Shock (SHIPSS) interventional trial. Since 2010, he has served in leadership roles for the Society of Critical Care Medicine and was President for that organization, 2018-2019. Zimmerman has been an Editorial Board member for Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine since 1993. In 2009 he received the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on Critical Care, Distinguished Career Award, and in 2020 the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Distinguished Service Award.
