Helen Cheyne

Helen is a Professor of Maternal and Child Health Research and Deputy Director of the Scottish Government Chief Scientist Office funded Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit at University of Stirling. She is a midwife and worked in the NHS in Glasgow and rural Scotland before becoming involved in research in pre-eclampsia and in early RCT of midwife led care.  She has gone on to develop and lead a successful programme of research in maternal and child health including RCTs and large-scale theory informed evaluation including implementation science. Her current research interests include perinatal mental health, care experiences of women who use drugs while pregnant and induction of labour. In 2019 she survived sepsis due to meningitis and as a result lost both feet and fingers. She currently coordinates the UK Professors in Midwifery and Maternal and Infant Health network that brings together the leading midwife and related academics from higher education and the National Health Service in the UK. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Midwives.
