Uduak Okomo

Uduak is a Clinical Assistant Professor within the Vaccines and Immunity Theme, MRC Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

She is a paediatrician and epidemiologist by training with more than 20 years of experience in paediatrics and child health in West Africa. The focus of her early research work has been on child survival, including severe malnutrition HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases in infants and children. In recent years she has had a strong focus on maternal and neonatal health particularly better measurement and reduction in the burden of maternal and newborn mortality in developing countries. Her work includes studies on the aetiology and management of serious infections, infection transmission dynamics in the community and hospital settings, infection control, antimicrobial resistance, and stillbirths.

She is also interested in implementation research and the use of routine healthcare data to improve the quality of facility-based care. Her objective is to improve maternal, newborn and child health in sub-Saharan Africa through engagement in research aimed at informing national and international health policy.

Uduak serves on several technical and advisory committees, including the Advisory Group for ReAct Toolbox, an online and open-access knowledge repository that collects evidence-based information for action on antibiotic resistance.
